Overview

The Medical Assisting Program at Capital provides students with learning opportunities which introduce, develop, and reinforce academic, occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job placement, retention, and advancement. The program plan of study includes general education and career-focused medical assisting courses. It should be noted that individuals currently employed by medical facilities may qualify to register for the more advanced course offerings.

As multi-skilled practitioners, graduates of the program will be eligible for career positions in the fast-growing, in-demand healthcare industry such as medical offices, hospitals, school-based health centers, health insurance companies, ambulatory and urgent care centers.

The objective of the program is to provide each student the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills in the classroom, the laboratory, and during hands-on experience in the healthcare areas (externship). The mission of the program is to prepare competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Upon satisfactory completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for National Certification Examinations through AAMA and AMT organizations. Successful exam candidates will be awarded the CMA or RMA credentials.

The Medical Assisting Program at Capital Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org). Upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB), the program has been placed on Probationary Accreditation as of July 21, 2016.

responsible for books, uniforms, transportation, and CPR/First Aid fees, in
addition to college tuition and fees.

Graduates of the Medical Assisting Program at Capital who participated in the graduate survey are satisfied with the education they received, as there is an average of 100% graduate satisfaction rate over the past five years.

Employer Satisfaction Rate 2011 through 2015

Employers who participated in the employer survey are satisfied with the education and training the students received and found the graduates to be competent in the work setting, as there is an average 100% employer satisfaction rate over the past five years.

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a review of a program, institution or service. An individual CANNOT be accredited. Accreditation means that an educational institution maintains standards that are a requirement of academic excellence based on guidelines from the accrediting agency. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality; therefore, providing admission to other reputable higher education institutions or to achieve credentials for professional practice.

What is Probationary Accreditation?

Probationary Accreditation is a temporary status of accreditation imposed when a program does not continue to meet accreditation Standards but should be able to meet them within a specified time.

Will the Medical Assisting Program still considered to be accredited while on probation?

Yes. However, probationary status indicates that the program has some areas that did not meet or exceed the accreditation standards. The program is given an opportunity to address the areas that require attention and will usually be re-visited by the accreditation agency to ensure these areas have been revised.

What is the Medical Assisting Program doing to review and revise the areas in need of correction, outlined in the accreditation report?

College President, Dean of Academic Affairs and the Medical Assistant Program faculty and staff take accreditation very seriously. We are committed to providing all applicants and enrolled students with the best educational experience. The areas in need of review and revision are being addressed at several levels including input from the Medical Assisting Program Advisory Committee made up of the Program Department Chairperson, Faculty, MA graduates, current MA students, Program Medical Advisor, Practice Managers and a representative from the community. The revisions are adapted from CAAHEP standards and guidelines.

Will the revisions being made in the medical assisting program require me to add courses to my planned program of study?

No. The changes we are making will enhance the program further but not add courses.

Does this affect the institutional accreditation of Capital Community College?

This does not affect institutional accreditation. The Medical Assistant Program has its own accreditation agency. Also, it is important to emphasize that probation is a status that can be changed, it is not the loss of accreditation. When on probation, it is a time for the program to reflect upon its operations and curriculum, and then to make revisions that will help the program to meet or exceed accreditation standards in all areas based on standards and guidelines.

If I graduate from a medical assisting program that is on probation, will I still be eligible to take the National Certification for Medical Assistant Exam?

Yes. Students who graduate from the medical assistant program at Capital Community College are eligible and encouraged to take the National Certification Exam for Medical Assisting through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

Any student who completes the program that was accredited by CAAHEP at any time during his/her matriculation is deemed by CAAHEP to be a graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited program.

If I graduate from a program that is on probation, will I be able to get a job?

The probationary accreditation status of the program should have no impact on your job search.
