Asplundh Utility Arborist Trainee Program

Course Description

The Asplundh Utility Arborist Trainee Program provides students with the basic understanding of the skills needed to start in this exciting career. The program will provide an overview of available careers and certifications that are part of the Utility Line Clearance Industry. We will discuss the basic safety and training techniques in tree trimming and tree felling. The student will gain an understanding of temporary traffic control, electrical basics, job briefings, proper lifting techniques, and the importance of effective communication on the work site.

Students will take the OSHA 10-HR Certification – Construction; AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED certifications; ATTSA Flagger Certification Training; and the CT DEEP Pesticide Commercial Junior Operator Certification.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be ready for entry level employment as a Utility Arborist Trainee at Asplundh Tree Experts, LLC.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will gain an understanding of:

  • Possible career objectives and opportunities in the Utility Line Clearance field.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • The importance of safety in the workplace and why it is important to follow established work procedures and policies.
  • How to identify risks and hazards on a typical Utility Line Clearance job site.
  • The importance of performing an effective job briefing.
  • How to assist in establishing effective temporary traffic control set ups.
  • Proper tree trimming and tree felling techniques.
  • The importance of preventing injuries on the job.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • The basis of First Aid, CPR, flagging techniques, and the proper use and applications of pesticides.
  • Their rights and responsibilities under OSHA 10-HR Certification – Construction.

Prerequisites

  • 17+ years of age (The applicant must be 18 at the time of hire.)
  • High School Diploma/GED (a college transcript can be used in lieu of the diploma).
  • Offer is contingent upon passing a drug test and background check screening.
  • Valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one before employment (students may be required to obtain a CDL license if the position requires it). CDL information can be found here: https://portal.ct.gov/DMV/Licenses/Licenses/Commercial-Drivers/CDL—Main-Menu
  • Ability to work in all-weather conditions.

Program Structure

  • Program runs for 8 weeks.
  • Courses will be offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings.
  • Students must successfully complete all modules of the course to pass the class.

Cost

  • All materials/certifications are included in the cost.
  • Payment plan available. Scholarships may be available.

Application Process

  • Submit your application to the College.
  • Include copies of your High School Diploma/GED (a college transcript can be used in lieu of the diploma).
  • Upon acceptance by the College, your information will be submitted to Asplundh for an interview.
  • After completion of interviews, candidates will be informed of their final acceptance to the program and will be contacted to register by the College.
