Yuan Zhang was struggling to find a job when she first came to the U.S. from China three years ago.
“I posted tons of resumes online but got nothing. Like many immigrants, I realized that I needed to learn the language,” Yuan recalled.
The only one in her family who can speak any English, Yuan is also the mother of a five-year old son, and had the responsibility of taking care of her whole family and helping them settle down in this new country.
“Continuing my education can give me a great chance to fit in this country and blend in with its culture,” she said. “Attaining a degree at Capital Community College is a good start for me to achieve my goals.”
Yuan is majoring in business management and will graduate next semester. Her plan is to earn a bachelor’s degree at CCSU and pursue a career in business field after she graduates.
“I was so lucky to be part of Capital Community College, which provides a lot of opportunities and supports to the students.”
One of those opportunities was acceptance into the Travelers EDGE (Empowering Dreams for Graduation and Employment) program, a partnership the corporation has with Capital to provide strong students with financial support, internships and job shadowing, and professional development workshops.
Another advantage of being at Capital, Yuan says, is the college’s downtown location, with a convenient commute and free bus pass. Being surrounded by museums and theatres also enabled Yuan to experience stimulating cultural activities in her free time for no, or little cost.
“I have had such a positive learning experience at Capital,” Yuan declared.
Arriving here with scant English skills, she is proud that in a relatively short time span she improved her communication skills, achieved academic success and developed leadership skills through an internship.
Throughout Yuan’s time at Capital, she felt if she worked hard, got good grades and stayed focused that she would find a way to make her dream come true. “Every single chance that makes me get close to my goals,” Yuan says, Capital gave her.
More confident now, a favorite quote Yuan wants to share with other students just beginning their educational journey is “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”Management Degree Info
