Step 1: Apply For Financial Aid
Capital Community College provides a variety of financial aid programs in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and jobs to eligible students. The amount and type of aid received is dependent upon the student’s financial need as well as annual federal and state allocations.
Action Item: Complete the online FAFSA application. For more information or help with Financial Aid, please visit the Financial Aid webpage or call the Financial Aid Office at (860) 906-5090. The Financial Aid Office is on the 2nd floor, room 216.
STEP 2: Transfer in credits
Transfer students who would like to have college credit transferred in from their previous college/university will need to submit their official college transcripts along with the “Request for Transfer Credit Evaluation” form to the Enrollment Services Office. The form may be downloaded here.

Step 3: Complete Placement Testing
Basic skills placement tests must be taken prior to registration. Students whose native language is other than English and have not received 3+ years of English instruction from a high school in the U.S. must take an ESL (English-as-a-Second Language) test. The results of these tests are used by the college staff to place students into appropriate courses. There is no cost to take the test. You will need your student banner ID number which was included in your acceptance email to make an appointment.
Action Item: Register now for your appointment to take the placement test. For more information about Placement Testing, please visit the Placement Testing webpage or call the Testing Center at (860) 906-5089. The Testing Center is located on the 2nd floor, room 220.
Step 4: Activate Your Student Email and myCommNet
Sign in to your Student E-Mail, myCommnet & setup your Microsoft Security Verification Method.
myCommNet: At Capital we utilize a software portal called myCommNet that allows you to access your grades, schedule, online coursework and library databases, all with the same user name and password: your NetID. You can access the software portal at myCommNet. Your user name and password is referred to as your NetID. As a student, your NetID is composed of the following two items: Username: Banner ID (without the “@”) Domain: @student.commnet.edu For Example: A student with a BannerID of @87654321 will have the following NetID: firstname.lastname@example.org
The initial password for all new NetIDs will be based on a combination of personal information of your birth date and social security number. Specifically, the following three items will makeup the initial password: 1st three characters of birth month (with first letter capitalized) the Ampersand character – & Last 4 digits of your Social Security Number For example, a user with a birth date of 10/24/79 and social security number of 123-45-6789 will have the initial password of: Oct&6789 You will be forced to change your password the first time you logon. This password will be good for 90 days, at which time the system will ask you to change your password again.
Student Email: Once you have logged into myCommNet, click the Student Email link. Log-in using your NetID and Password (same as you use to log in to myCommNet). You can also log in directly from the Office 365 website. Your assigned student email address is displayed along with the log-in link in myCommNet. All official college email communications are automatically sent to this email account.
Security Verification: All new Students must select a security verification method for NetID password resets; skipping this step may result in you not being able to access Student E-Mail and Banner Self-Service.
Action item: Log on to myCommNet and your student email account. Establish your security verification method. Why am I getting a “More information required” popup?
Step 5: Meet With A Counselor
Counseling services are designed to be an integral part of students’ total educational program. Upon acceptance, all new students must meet with a counselor to discuss academic and career goals and plan their first semester’s course work.
Action Item: Meet with a counselor and discuss course selection. You can call the Counseling Center at (860) 906-5040 or email the Counseling Center at CA-Counseling@capitalcc.edu.
Step 6: Sign Up For Classes
Class registration is typically performed over the Internet using myCommNet – see step 3. Using myCommNet, students can search the course schedules, register for classes and make payments. You can also register for classes on campus by visiting our Enrollment Services department.
Action Item: Register for your classes for the upcoming term. For more information about enrollment, please visit the Counseling Center webpage or call the Counseling Center at (860) 906-5040. The Counseling Center is on the 2nd floor, room 208.
Step 7: Pay Your Tuition
All fees must be paid and/or your Financial Aid award must be in place within 24 hours of registering for classes. Payments can be made in person at the Bursar’s office or online through myCommNet.
