the Black Heritage Project
The Black Heritage Project centers on the history and people of the Talcott Street Church, Hartford’s first Black church and school for Black children, which was located on a site next to Capital Community College from 1826-1954.
In collaboration with nearby museums, the project develops three components under the theme of empowering students through the history of the Talcott Street Church and School:

A PERMANENT EXHIBITION
The Nutmeg Pulpit (ribbon cutting pictured above) supports our pedagogy and commemorates the historic site launched in September 2022.
AN ANNUAL PUBLIC LECTURE CALLED “THE PENNINGTON LECTURE”
named after Talcott Church pastor James W.C. Pennington, this series is themed on understanding race issues through the lens of the humanities.
