The Black Heritage Project centers on the history and people of the Talcott Street Church, Hartford’s first Black church and school for Black children, which was located on a site next to Capital Community College from 1826-1954.

In collaboration with nearby museums, the project develops three components under the theme of empowering students through the history of the Talcott Street Church and School:

BLACK HERITAGE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT

Capital Community College offers over a dozen Black Heritage courses!

A PERMANENT EXHIBITION

The Nutmeg Pulpit (ribbon cutting pictured above) supports our pedagogy and commemorates the historic site launched in September 2022.
