Paramedic Studies: Emergency Management Response Option, A.S.
Overview
The Associate in Science Degree in Paramedic Studies is designed as an extension to the Paramedic Certificate program. Graduates of this program will be prepared to assume management-level careers in pre-hospital health administration. They will have learned the skills necessary to plan, implement and manage pre-hospital care.
Career opportunities available for graduates of this program include employment as supervisors or managers of emergency medical services and as educational coordinators.
Students requesting that CCC accept credits from other colleges for science courses are advised that a time limitation may apply.
Goal
The goal of the program is to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.

Capital Community College’s paramedic program holds national accreditation through CoAEMSP.

After successful completion of the Paramedic Studies AS or Certificate program at Capital, graduates must take and pass the Cognitive Exam and the Psychomotor Exam from the National Registry of EMTs in order to become a licensed paramedic in Connecticut. This exam process is used by 40 states in the nation. Many of these states allow reciprocity between each other. Once both of these conditions are met, the student may apply (and pay) to obtain a license from the state within which they would like to practice.
Admission
In order to be admitted into the Paramedic classes, applicants must submit:
- Current State EMT Certification
- Current CPR certification
- Two written recommendations from two health professionals
- Validation of 50-75 patient care calls as an EMT
- Copy of high school diploma or equivalency
- Completion of CCC EMT examination with a minimum score of 80
- Completion of CCC placement tests
- Final acceptance contingent upon documentation of immunization and health verification

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Paramedic program, the graduate will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate theoretical information relevant to his/her role of a patient care provider in the field of out-of-hospital emergency care as a Paramedic. The graduate will:
- Provide advanced emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services system
- Integrate the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide advanced level patient care and transportation
- Function as a member of the comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight
- Perform patient care interventions including invasive and pharmacological interventions to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with acute out-of-hospital medical and traumatic emergencies

The Capital Community College Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
